TEACHING EXPERIENCE: PAINTING 1, Pi Art Center NYC
STUDENTS make a simple collage on the first day of class. On the second day of class they bring in a canvas and replicate the collage exactly. We use the grid method to transfer the composition. we discuss the color wheel to learn how to match colors by mixing paints.
texture and relief PAINTING
STUDENTS use sand, paper pulp, and modeling paste to make an abstract painting that exaggerates texture, builds up relief surfaces, and explores the materiality of a painted object.
STUDENTS MAKE A PAINTING BASED ON A SCREEN, WHETHER THAT IS AN IPHONE OR A COMPUTER. WE LOOK AT THE EFFECT PHOTOGRAPHY HAS HAD ON PAINTING FROM VERMEER TO RICHTER. WE LOOK AT CONTEMPORARY ABSTRACTION INFLUENCED BY DIGITAL APPLICATIONS SUCH AS PHOTOSHOP. STUDENTS CREATE A PAINTING FROM A SCREEN AND ARE ENCOURAGED TO INCORPORATE IDEAS AND EXPERIENCES ABOUT THE UBIQUITY OF SCREENS IN EVERYDAY LIFE.
